Sam made his way to the greenhouse that stood on its own some thirty yards away from the rear of the east wing of the house, checking the watch on his wrist and measuring the hour against rush hour traffic and the beginning of his meeting with several international bankers at the Balfour Building on Chestnut Street downtown.But as he’d told Paige, you’re gonna have to serve somebody, and Uncle Ned had called this meeting, named the time and place and Sam had no choice but to attend.

He opened the door to the greenhouse, closing it again quickly against the morning chill that had frosted the lawns of Balfour Hall, and called his uncle’s name.

Uncle Ned lived for his flowers, and the greenhouse had been expanded several times over the years, until it now rivaled some of the local nurseries for size and capabilities. But what was money for, if it couldn’t buy you a few toys?

Sam passed by a long table crowded with pots of a flower he suddenly recognized. It was tall, a little spiky, and with its flowers exactly like those he’d seen last night in the great foyer.

“Son of a gun,” he said under his breath, feeling like a fool. Now he knew who put those fresh flowers in the great foyer once a week. Who put fresh flowers all over the house, for that matter. “I really have to slow down, start paying more attention to what the hell goes on around here…. Uncle Ned? Where are you?”

“Over here, Sam. Turn left at the table of amaryllis.”

“I would, if I knew what the hell an amaryllis looked like! Keep talking, Uncle Ned, and I’ll just follow your voice.” Sam pulled the handkerchief from his back pocket and wiped at his forehead before shrugging out of his cashmere topcoat. You could roast an ox in this overheated building with no problem.

“Ah, see that you found me,” Uncle Ned said, smiling. He was seated on a high stool, a rubber apron tied around his spreading waistline, the bib of the apron held in place by the loop of material slung around his neck. He had on bright green rubber gloves, and he was snipping at a sad-looking plant with a small pair of clippers. “Emergency surgery,” he said, snipping off another small, limp branch.

“Really. Will the patient live?”

“It’ll be touch and go for a while, but I think so, yes.” Uncle Ned put down the clippers. “You didn’t listen to me, Sam. I’m extremely disappointed in you. Extremely disappointed.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Sam said, knowing damn full well what his uncle was talking about. Whom his uncle was talking about.

“Don’t insult me. Paige Halliday isn’t like your other women, Sam.”

Sam nodded. He’d been thinking the same thing almost constantly since last night. The woman had gotten to him. How, he didn’t know. He had already planned to see her again today, even if he had to make up a reason. “I agree. She’s nothing like any woman I’ve known.
